North of the &quot;shadow wall&quot; (影壁) is the Archway (牌樓) 影壁是汉族传统建筑大门内的屏蔽墙 (<a href="http://nongli.com/Doc/1410/15214427.htm" rel="nofollow">nongli.com/Doc/1410/15214427.htm</a>)，古人称为萧墙，因而有禍起蕭牆之说，主要作用是使門外之人不能窺其堂奧，故又称屏风墙或照壁。在南向的住宅內，把照壁塗上白色，晨昏太陽在東、西方時，照壁的反光更能使庭院更明亮。宮殿和廟宇沒有庭院深深的要求，所以在中軸線上不應出現影壁。
