Circa 1915: Early days of the Royal Australian Naval College, HMAS CRESWELL, at Jervis Bay. by Kookaburra2011

4545. Situated on Captain's Point in the Booderee National Park at Jervis Bay, 180 kms south of Sydney, the Royal Australian Naval College HMAS CRESWELL has been the leadership cradle of the RAN for almost a century, and a place, apparently, of great beauty. Among its first graduating class of 1916 - moved from the first, temporary college at Osborne House, Geelong, Victoria - were John Collins and Harold Farncomb, later flag officers and two of the RAN's outstanding commanders during WWII. Jefferson Hirst Walker, who didn't make flag rank - he died on HMAS PARRAMATTA [II] - had arrived at the newly-opened college in January 1915. And so many others who rose to high rank and acghieved distinction. We had a photo of the first RANC, Osborne House, at pic NO. 4278 here: www.flickr.com/photos/41311545@N05/5595631714/ Here's how another flag officer, VADM Sir Henry Burrell, recalled his own arrival, typical of many, at Jervis Bay. "....In early January 1918 my mother saw me on to a train at Sydney's central Station bound for Bombadery on the south coast of New South Wales. Upon arrival there we 36 young gentlemen were ushered into a dilapidated bus for the journey to the Royal Australian Naval College at Jervis Bay, twenty five miles away, over a narrow road with culverts instead of bridges crossing the many streams on the way... Burrell talk about the first rituals, and learning to salute the quarterdeck - the playing field in front of the college, around which he was the equal slowest runner of his class. "...After our arrival there was not much time to take in the beauty surrounding the college ....However, I remember the boat harbour with the steam yacht HMAS FRANKLIN moored inside the breakwater, and the bay beyond. The cliffs on the north side of the entrance made a neat silhouette, especially at moonrise, with an imposing lighthouse perched atop Point Perpendicular. To the South was Bowen island, a fine place for picnics and to stalk wallabies. How they came to be there noone knew. Between these extremities were spread some of the whitest beaches in the world, and beyond was the Pacific, its horizon, when a heavy swell was running, breaking up to look like great migrating whales..." . A photograph of the 350 ton steam yacht HMAS FRANKLIN in the boat harbour at RANC Jervis Bay is at pic 3457, here: www.flickr.com/photos/41311545@N05/5250499965/ The building with the clocktower in the page extract photograph abovbe - the visual focal point of the HMAS Creswell complex - is the Gymnasium Building. Another account of beginnings at Jervis Bay refers to the 'dilapidated bus' Burrell rode. "Year after year it stopped outside the pub in Nowra. "On account,' said the driver to sucessive generations, ' of having a parcel to collect,' Both bus and driver had their place in college myth, wrote Paul and Frances McGuire, in their 1944 book 'The Price of Admiralty.' '....The college was mostluy built about a large field , the Quarter-Deck, used as a parade ground and senior sports field. To the north east were the school buildings and the Gymnasium with its clock tower. Opposite, southwest of the the Quarter Deck, were the Cadets Quarters: two-storied buildings with a mess room among them. To the south-east of the Quarter Deck was the Captain's House. Inland from it was the Administration Block. Further inland were married quarters for the Petty Officers. Behind the Cadets Quarters were the Quarters for the Ship'sd Company. All overlooked the Bay....About were low, scrub covered hills or the bright sea. The College stood alone in a world of empty hills and seas. It was swept by winds. IIt probably had more fresh air than any place else between the Gulf of Anadir and Mount Erebus ...' [Paul and Frances McGuire, 'Tghe Price of Admiralty']. Photo: from a book, source now unknown.
